Once INNS take a hold it is really difficult and costly to control it, ideally it needs to be eradicated completely. Until it has been eradicated there is a risk that it can be inadvertently transported to other waters.
These species may have been introduced into lakes when someone emptied out the contents of their pond or fish tank. They probably thought that they were doing a good thing by not killing it off and letting it grow elsewhere. They may have been introduced from someone’s fishing gear or clothing. They may have been introduced by someone’s paddle craft or kit. It doesn’t really matter now how it got there, what matters is stopping it getting into other waters.
Wherever we paddle we always need to be Check Clean Dry aware. Our paddlecraft and kit must be carefully checked for any INNS including the smallest of fragments of plants, we need to thoroughly wash everything and then make sure it is fully dried before getting on to another water.
You will notice some new signs around Llyn Padarn highlighting the INNS problem there. Please take note of these signs and please check clean dry as thoroughly as you can, we can’t afford for this problem to spread to other waters.
