Whitewater Kayaking & Canoeing - Kayak & Canoe Coaching

Welcome to Canolfan Tryweryn (CT), the National White Water Centre and home to the best whitewater and coaching facilities in the UK .

Canolfan Tryweryn was established in 1972 with the aim of providing both whitewater facilities for recreational kayaking and coaching courses for those who wanted to improve their skills or gain professional qualifications. Over the last 20 years CT has expanded and developed and is now the leading whitewater centre in the UK, delivering over 100 coaching courses and welcoming thousands of canoeists and kayakers every year.

Whitewater Kayak on the River TrywerynLocated on the banks of the Afon Tryweryn – 8km of classic Welsh whitewater - the centre enjoys year-round access to the river as well as year-round whitewater. This is because the Tryweryn is a dam-controlled river (rather than rain-fed), which means that there is often water when all the other rivers are dry. The average dam release is 9 cumecs which makes the upper/centre section a grade 3/4 river with both technical sections (Graveyard) and steep drops (Ski Jump, Chapel Falls), and the lower section (centre to Bala), continuous grade 2/3 with one grade 4 drop.

As well as providing facilities for recreational boating and coaching courses CT also hosts numerous whitewater events including wild water races, slalom competitions and freestyle events. In addition to these there is also the Tryweryn Coaching Festival, which is a mix of whitewater boating, coaching courses, competitions and evening events and is the highlight of many boater's calendars!

CT Festival actionAlthough CT takes whitewater kayaking and canoeing very seriously there is also a light-hearted side to the Centre. CT has a very active social scene and as much time is spent chatting in the eddies and in reception as is spent surfing and river running!

Canolfan Tryweryn is self–funded, being run on a commercial basis to support the development of the WCA. All profits generated are used to develop both the facilities at the centre and canoesport in Wales .
